"This report on the conditions to be met by third country nationals or stateless persons in order to be able to benefit from international protection focuses on the important and, unfortunately, very topical issue of refugees. This is an area that should be treated with the utmost care and should promote full respect for human dignity, especially when we are talking about refugees who have already been beset by extremely harsh situations in their countries of origin. They often come from warzones, as in the recent example of Libya, a country now experiencing a tragic situation in this regard, exacerbated by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation aggression and the bombing of the country by this warlike organisation, with the support of the EU. However, we do not agree with the policies and proposals set out in this report. We believe that this issue of protection and asylum should fully respect the sovereignty of the Member States, and that it should be they that set the conditions of their own asylum policies, without prejudice to any agreements that they may decide to make in the exercise of that sovereignty."@en1
