Tougher sanctions against these crimes will only work if we also abolish limitation and prescription periods at the same time. This is doubly important when one realises that sexual abuse can often have a destructive impact on the next generation. Breaking the perpetrator-victim-perpetrator cycles, which can extend over many generations, not only requires comprehensive legal investigation with harsh punishment for the perpetrators, but also more treatment by psychotherapists. We should not overlook the recent rise in so-called virtual child pornography, in other words the depiction of sexual acts on children using computer animations. We must also take significant steps against child prostitution on European soil, for example in regions near the EU’s borders in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine, the Baltic and Poland. These improved measures at EU level to combat the sexual abuse of children are to be welcomed."@en1
