"Madam President, it is not enough to vote on a motion for a resolution; we must take action on a daily basis to ensure that Christians around the world do not suffer persecution. Not only because Europe has Christian roots – or should I say Christianity is our religion – but because this is first and foremost a human rights and minority rights issue.
If we think about the decline of the Christian population in Syria from 10% to 8%, and the fact that in Egypt several thousand Christians have been forced to convert to Islam, or that Christian minorities in Iraq, who have survived centuries of dictatorships, are now dying out, the responsibility facing the European Union is enormous. This is, on the one hand, because we should not be ashamed of our Christian past, and on the other, because within the EU we should not tolerate discrimination of any sort against ethnic or religious minorities. We still have a great deal to do, especially in terms of setting an example and leading by example."@en1
