"Madam President, first of all, I too would like to congratulate our rapporteur, Ms in ‘t Veld, for her exceptional efforts. The PNR Agreement with Australia is largely satisfactory, marking a step forward compared with the previous negotiations of this kind. The positive aspects derive from the fact that automatic data processing is banned in principle and also that means are provided for administrative and judicial appeals against possible abuses. However, issues still remain with some aspects. I am referring here not only to how long the data can be kept for, but also to the transfer of data to third countries. I also want to point out to the Commission that, just now when cyber attacks have become increasingly frequent and more widespread, we must have a guarantee that PNR data is stored and transferred under maximum security. Future agreements, especially those currently being negotiated with the US and Canada, must take a quantum leap and clear up the current misunderstandings which persist."@en1
