"Madam President, in 2009 more than 6 million young people dropped out of school. Of these 17.4% only completed primary schooling. This is why one of the priority targets of the Europe 2020 strategy is to reduce the school dropout rate to below 10%. Providing access to education and pre-school care for all children is essential for social integration, personal development and entry into working life. The European Union’s objective is to ensure a high level of protection for children when they are online, including their personal data, while supporting their right to access the Internet as a beneficial tool for their social and cultural development. The Safer Internet Programme coordinates and support the efforts at European Union level to empower and protect children on the Internet. Various sectors of the information technology and communications industry have been involved in raising the level of protection provided to children who use a mobile phone and social networking services. Commissioner, I call for the continuation of the Safer Internet Programme."@en1
