"The rapidly growing resistance of bacteria to antimicrobials is a really worrying issue. This is illustrated clearly by the fact that each year at least 25 000 patients in the EU die from infections caused by bacteria which are resistant to many drugs, and that as a result of the infections these cause, the EU faces additional healthcare expenditure every year and losses amounting to approximately EUR 1.5 billion. Undoubtedly, there is a need for complex measures which would help address the issue of antimicrobial resistance and which would cover monitoring and strengthening control of the use of authorised antimicrobials for humans and animals, increase incentives to find new antimicrobials and reduce the chance of resistance spreading from animals to humans through the food chain or direct contact. This phenomenon clearly has cross-border implications, and therefore I share this concern over the use of antimicrobials and wish to draw attention to a series of shortfalls and gaps in the promotion of the prudent use of antimicrobials which were identified by the latest Eurobarometer survey and encourage the European Commission to investigate trends relating to inappropriate antimicrobial use and to present as soon as possible a legislative package for combating antimicrobial resistance which would promote initiatives for responsible use and appropriate information for consumers."@en1
