"Mr President, Commissioner, the precautionary principle is enshrined in our European Constitution, in the Treaty of Lisbon. That is simply because, in the history of mankind, we often had early warning signs of impending disasters, but failed to act promptly and suffered drastic consequences as a result.
Antibiotics are a typical example. We already have the first signs and now is the time for immediate action.
I am delighted that the Commission is preparing a proposal on how we should take coordinated action on this risk at EU level and I trust that this proposal will manage to cover all the important points.
We really must put a stop to the unnecessary use of antibiotics. We must stop giving antibiotics out over the counter for people, animals and crops."@en1
