"Mr President, Mr Dalli, Mr Fronczak, it gives me great pleasure to see someone from my own region of Łódź speaking on behalf of the Council. I am pleased with the motion for a resolution, which concerns a serious problem affecting human health. However, I am pleased, too, that the motion has taken note of the problem of large industrial farms and the threat associated with the use of antibiotics on the animals raised on these farms. These farms are very often operated under scandalous conditions; the animals there are crowded together, deprived of space and deprived of movement; they fight each other and are weakened, and – to keep them alive – they are stuffed with antibiotics. Then their meat becomes food for people, with all the adverse consequences this entails.
We should indeed prohibit practices of this kind associated with the prophylactic use of antibiotics, but we should also ban this kind of husbandry, which is inhuman and unworthy of mankind in the 21st century."@en1
