"Mr President, I wish, on behalf of my political group, to voice our surprise at how the Council has handled the question of resettlement of refugees.
The Council’s position has still not been made clear to us, because it has done nothing over the long period of time since the agreement was brokered at first reading.
As we all know full well, the Member States can already benefit from the European Refugee Fund. In order to encourage the Member States to resettle refugees – because, generally speaking, there are very low resettlement rates at global level – the Member States of the European Union receive EUR 4 000 per refugee.
The agreement we brokered together simply upgrades the current practice, by making provision for greater economic aid: EUR 6 000 instead of 4 000 for Member States which have never resettled refugees, so that they can develop suitable infrastructures.
Given that this will create a win-win situation – in fact nearly everyone stands to gain something – I truly do not understand why the agreement has been blocked in the Council for so long and why the Member States have not done anything.
I should like to ask the Council representative for an explanation."@en1
