"I voted in favour of the aforementioned report because I think that bolstering professional skills and participation in the labour market is an essential tool for a Europe intending to continue its journey to economic, financial and social recovery. Under the Europe 2020 strategy, the European Commission has set an EU-wide goal of achieving 75% employment in the 20-64 age group, thereby guaranteeing the sustainability of welfare systems and not insignificant improvement in the public finances of the EU Member States.
I therefore think that, in tandem with the approach set out by the Commission and very much in support of Ms Bastos’s position, there are further margins for improvement. I am therefore voting in favour of a report that aims to provide further support for the implementation of specific measures designed to ensure the availability of qualified labour, reduce structural unemployment, improve labour market functioning – making it inclusive – and improving job quality and working conditions."@en1
