"It is a cause for pride that the first two European satellites have been put into orbit this month, which will comprise part of the GALILEO constellation by the end of the decade, with a total of 30 satellites, more than 23 000 km from the Earth. The GALILEO satellites, which are of entirely civilian origin, will provide an alternative satellite positioning system, enabling Europe to become independent of the United States’ Global Positioning System. I am therefore in favour of the conclusion of an agreement with the US on the promotion, provision and use of both satellite-based navigation systems."@en1
