"Mr President, I admit I am concerned that the European Council has so far failed to formulate its position on revising the Maternity Leave Directive. The European Parliament has done everything to make the revision of the directive fit into the current period, and for this legislation to contribute to better care for mothers and infants by the state. The EU is ageing and slowly dying, and the position of the European Parliament is therefore natural and right, revising the current legislation to extend maternity leave, increasing contributions and enabling fathers to have paid leave for infant care as well. If some Member State representatives think that better care for mothers and infants when they most need it is a large burden for their countries, they should also say how they want to address current demographic developments, and how they want to secure the future of their country without children. Without good care for women during the period of maternity, Europe will not have children, and without children it will have no future, and that would be terrible, in my opinion."@en1
