"Madam President, the rapidly changing economic reality confronts the peoples of Europe with greater and greater demands when it comes to the labour market. Skills that just 20 years ago were mastered by only a handful of specialists in the field of computer literacy, for instance, are a fundamental requirement for most jobs today. The European Union should encourage as many of its citizens as possible to embrace the idea of lifelong learning so that they can effectively meet the new challenges they are faced with in the labour market.
The European Union must also pay ever more attention to the demands the European labour market will present in the future, especially when it comes to specialist skills. Taking appropriate action in order to adapt Europeans to an increasingly demanding labour market is particularly important today in the context of the economic crisis which is haunting the Union. We need economic growth on a massive scale to get out of this crisis. This growth cannot be achieved without significantly increasing the level of employment. We should therefore ensure that the citizens of the Union are prepared in the best possible manner for the future challenges of the labour market."@en1
