"Article 208 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union says that, in the area of aid, ‘Union development cooperation policy shall have as its primary objective the reduction and, in the long term, the eradication of poverty. The Union shall take account of the objectives of development cooperation in the policies that it implements which are likely to affect developing countries’. It is important to stress that the EU and its 27 Member States are the largest donors of official development assistance, so they have a vital role in strengthening the effectiveness of aid granted at international level. I am voting for this report, as I believe countries should step up cooperation at international level, harmonise their efforts and streamline their procedures. I also believe it is important to step up financial aid and involve the private sector in the aid to be given to the most disadvantaged countries, in order to build an economy that is not dependent on external aid, to ensure sustainable development, and to create wealth. Lastly, I believe that the fourth High-level forum on aid effectiveness should be able to develop a new international aid architecture in the run-up to the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals."@en1
