"Organised crime is on the increase in the European Union, as a result of both the economic and financial crisis and the abolition of border controls. The trafficking in and exploitation of human beings, financial crime, international drugs and arms trafficking, money laundering and financial crimes, corruption and the misappropriation of public funds are some of the activities to which these mafias are dedicated. This report, drafted by Ms Alfano, concerns this practice, which is detrimental to the interests of the European public and the EU institutions, and it sets out guidelines which Parliament believes should be followed as part of a better EU legislative framework, with a view to stopping the internationalisation of mafia-style criminal organisations, particularly by strengthening and improving the functioning of European structures involved in this fight, such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Interpol. Given that the EU must make every effort to ensure that its territory is an area of freedom, with freedom of movement for people and goods, but also an area of security, I fully agree with the measures tabled in this report and I hope they will be implemented by the Member States as swiftly as possible."@en1
