"As the report just voted on says, ‘organised crime, especially mafia-style crime, is taking advantage of globalisation, the abolition of borders in the EU and the legislative differences among the Member States to make increasingly substantial profits whilst, at the same time, ensuring they remain unpunished’. This is a serious state of affairs and would, on its own, oblige the EU to reflect seriously. We did not abolish our borders to facilitate organised crime. We did not establish a common area of freedom, security and justice so that organised crime would flourish. I am sure that the Commission will take into account Parliament’s proposals on combating organised crime and that it will soon table concrete measures to that end."@en1
