"I believe the labour market restrictions being imposed by some Member States on Romanian and Bulgarian nationals should be lifted by the end of 2011. I believe these barriers are counterproductive and constitute discriminatory measures against European citizens. As long as there are no negative effects registered from labour mobility, there is no socio-economic justification for maintaining the barriers for entry into a new job market. Official figures, including those from the Commission, show that workers from Eastern Europe have neither caused unemployment nor put pressure on social security systems. Instead, the influx of these workers has generated economic growth in their destination countries, estimated at approximately one per cent of gross domestic product. I voted for this report, as I regret the recent legislative proposals in certain Member States aimed at weakening the rights of workers from countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007, and I call on the Commission to investigate whether such policies are in breach of EU law."@en1
