"I voted in favour of the report by Mr Kósa, which highlighted the physical and social obstacles that unfortunately still exist in many Member States and that restrict the lives of 80 million disabled people living all over Europe. To date, however, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has not yet been ratified by all the EU countries. Out of 27 Member States, 11 still have to sign, and even where ratified, implementation is still deficient precisely in accessibility to spaces and buildings.
According to the EU 2020 strategy, one of the most important objectives is to increase the rate of employment. This requires removing all the barriers that hinder the access of disabled people to the labour market and developing national policies in line with the European Commission’s European Disability Strategy, including simple access to public and private transport. Social inclusion and employment must also play a bigger part in strategies and in European funding.
Finally, I agree with the rapporteur on the need for a European mobility card for reciprocal recognition of care for people with disabilities, which would guarantee travel on any means of transport for all."@en1
