"One person in four with disabilities in Europe is facing the risk of poverty at a time when many European Union governments have resorted to making outrageous cuts to social benefits. People with disabilities are also facing serious discrimination, from the fall in the number of those attending secondary school or university to the problems they have getting a job and gaining access to medical care.
One of the foreseeable consequences of the failure to integrate the working population with disabilities will be to miss the Europe 2020 strategy objective of achieving an employment rate of 75% of the total working population aged between 20 and 64.
Last but not least, I would like to stress that more than one third of Europeans over the age of 75 have a disability, and the proportion of elderly people is on the rise. Investing in adapting education systems and in preventing disabilities and their resulting consequences may provide some relief for social budgets and would improve the prospects of integrating our fellow citizens with disabilities. These are the reasons why I support the resolution."@en1
