"Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is a mechanism for reaching out-of-court settlements by helping consumers and traders to settle their disputes through the intervention of a mediator or arbitrator. I welcome the Commission’s intention to encourage the use of alternative means of dispute resolution that are accessible, swift and effective, do not incur high costs, and offer the possibility of establishing and maintaining high-quality commercial, economic, social and neighbourly relations on the basis of mutual trust. The aim is to help raise the level of consumer protection in a ‘win-win’ situation, offering more benefits to both sides than current judicial practice. I think that existing shortcomings with regard to the geographical coverage of ADR methods in Europe must be urgently rectified. I encourage the introduction of an effective out-of-court dispute settlement system for consumer contracts to operate across the European Union."@en1
