"Madam President, the European institutions were right when they determined that there should be a European Semester. Coordination of budgetary policy is very important as a means of coordinating economic policies too, but there have been practical problems with the implementation of this good idea. The European Semester requires genuine cooperation between the various European institutions. It is impossible for the European Parliament only to be informed over the Internet. The public did not vote for Members of the European Parliament who are mere e-mail addresses; they voted for representatives of their interests and that is the first lesson that must be borne in mind. Secondly, however, has the European Semester already gone as far as it can? The answer is no. The European institutions need speed, they need an effective response to the current crisis and, for this very reason, I must say that the news that has been reaching the public over the last week is worrying.
To be completely honest, I can see further postponements, I can feel excessive indecision, and I can hear talk of studies. Europe does not need studies; it needs decisions for effective economic governance that are based on the European Commission and monitored by the European Parliament, and that take into consideration the interests of all the EU’s citizens rather than simply those of national governments."@en1
