"Madam President, as the rapporteur also mentioned, nine out of 10 jobs in the European Union are carried out in the services sector. This area is clearly the driving force of the European Union’s economy, generating roughly two thirds of the EU’s GDP. We need a single services market which performs really efficiently and operates as a key instrument for generating economic growth and jobs and for improving the EU’s global competitiveness. Unfortunately, there still remains a great deal to do to ensure the smooth operation of the single services market. I think that, in this regard, an increased role needs to be played by national, regional and local administrations in Member States. Dialogue with them also needs to be stepped up, as is the case with the regions and local public authorities. The mutual evaluation process is a valuable instrument for identifying the remaining obstacles. This is a shared responsibility, and the success of the actions being proposed will be achieved by engaging all the relevant institutions and parties in this process."@en1
