"Madam President, death is always sad and it is sad and tragic when someone dies – as a result of an accident, disease or terrorism – and for households, especially when someone takes his or her own life.
Suicide has been with us at least since the time of Judas, and particularly since the economic recession it has become more prevalent across the European Union. I see the trend in my own country. However, we do not have any up-to-date or uniform statistics on it and I think it is time that the Commission and Eurostat addressed that issue across the EU so that we can bridge the knowledge gap and maybe come up with solutions to this unfortunate epidemic.
Why does the suicide rate vary so much from Member State to Member State, region to region and parish to parish, and by gender?
At the weekend, I attended a funeral of a 32-year-old man, with two lovely children and a lovely wife, who had committed suicide. I think that we need to address this issue. I intend to write to the Commission and I would ask others to join with me in signing such a letter."@en1
