"Madam President, around 88 million people with disabilities live in the EU. For disabled people, mobility in our society means their being able to live their lives with as few barriers as possible, independently, and hence in the way they want to. To achieve this, it is crucial that we integrate disabled people into the labour market more. The employment level among disabled people varies from one Member State to another, but the overall average for the EU is pretty low. There is thus still much to be done; we have a lot of catching up to do. Studies show that disabled people often perform at an above-average level if they are given employment appropriate to their skills and abilities. We need greater awareness of this in the EU. Small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, have a key role to play in employing disabled people. The integration of people with disabilities should also be included as a parameter when awarding public contracts."@en1
