"Mr President, there are eight million people with some form of disability in the EU, and this report covers numerous important issues. It is right to focus on long-term investment for people with disabilities, to look towards social inclusion and to look at problems faced in terms of health care. But it needs to go further. If the European Parliament is serious in protecting the rights of people with disabilities, it should deal with the issue in the same way it now deals with women’s rights.
I have long held the belief that the focus of the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality is too narrow. It is time for the rights of other vulnerable groups to be covered by this committee. I believe we need a committee on equalities, which will help deal with discrimination that is based on gender, ethnicity, age, disability and sexual orientation. That would be a truly bold move which would offer support to people with disabilities as well as other groups that are often treated unfairly."@en1
