"The EU cannot first set out specific requirements for new countries wishing to join the Schengen area, and then, soon after these have been achieved, use populist arguments to deny countries entry. The position of the Netherlands and Finland is not what springs to mind when we recall why we are proud of the EU as an area of solidarity. I am not surprised that new criteria may be needed for integration into the Schengen area in future cases of accession, but after Romania and Bulgaria have made a major effort to meet the current criteria, I do not believe it is right that they should be denied entry to the Schengen area."@en1
