"Adoption of the resolution on the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen without the amendments proposed by the political groups which have expressed extremist views or should not express views at all because they are not resident in the Schengen area, and I do not believe they ever will be, demonstrates that the European Parliament is a body which has not been infected with the virus of extreme right-wing populism. I hope that this resolution will prompt two Member States, the Netherlands and Finland, to seriously consider whether they do indeed believe in democracy and respect for the rules which they were involved in drawing up.
It is, however, unfortunate that strong and traditional parties are managing to change their public agenda rooted in Community standards and requirements under pressure from extremist parties which are governing on the back of Europe’s slide towards isolationism and extremism partly due, perhaps, to an excessively liberal policy on immigration from outside the Community. It is all the more unfortunate when the citizens of some Member States have to bear the consequences of such actions even though they have done everything they have been asked to do in order to join other citizens in being able to travel without border controls."@en1
