"Since the European Union is one of the leading weapons manufacturers and exporters in the world, the creation of a uniform system for trade in firearms, their parts, components and ammunition is absolutely essential. This is not a matter of a simple regulation to reduce the maximum time allowed for processing authorisation requests, particularly with regard to arms for civilian use. Rather, it relates to the obvious need to set up a tracing mechanism using export authorisations, as well as import and transit measures, that are designed to strike a blow against illegal weapons trafficking. I would like to congratulate Mr Iacolino on this text, which aims to protect the safety of the Union and the weapons industry. I hope that all those countries that have not yet signed or ratified the United Nations Firearms Protocol will reflect upon and adopt the measures set out in the Protocol, deciding to work together to fight international organised crime and to bolster cooperation between national authorities."@en1
