"I voted in favour of the appointment of Mr Asmussen as a Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB). Following the resignation this summer of Jürgen Stark, I believe that getting the Board back to full strength is a matter of urgency, especially in these times of crisis, when the ECB has played, and continues to play, a fundamental role. I hope that the Council gives the necessary approval as soon as possible, not least to send a message of cohesion and unity. I should like to take this opportunity to commend the ECB for what it has done, and is still doing, to maintain the stability of the euro and of the entire European Union. Were it not for the wisdom and the effectiveness of its actions during this crisis, I am not sure whether the Member States, particularly those in the euro area, would have had the ability and the strength to withstand and endure so much financial upheaval on their own. Fortunately, the ECB, in accordance with the Treaties and with its mandate, stepped in without hesitation, demonstrating a European spirit that should serve as a model for the other EU institutions."@en1
