"Madam President, I would like in my speech to draw the attention of Ms Reding, Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, to the resolution adopted on 4 September this year by the European Association of Judges and addressed to the Slovak Minister for Justice. This international institution has rejected moves to reform the judiciary. It criticises the method of selecting judges by commissions that are wholly under the control of the governing coalition. It criticises the transfer of the right to submit proposals for disciplinary action against judges to the minister, as well as the criticism of judicial decisions by representatives of Slovak executive and legislative power. The resolution puts the current Slovak Government to shame. Even though the Slovak Parliament yesterday expressed its lack of confidence in the government and we face early elections, the Commission should respond. The constitutional court’s suspension of the law on the office of public prosecutor, which was intended to bring the independent prosecutor completely under the control of the minister, also deserves a response."@en1
