"Madam President, there are, in fact, episodes that really belong in the realm of the absurd, and what happened yesterday was one such episode. A group of young people from various parts of Europe met in Brussels as part of the protest movements, and Members of this House invited us to meet with them and discuss their ideas. What then happened was that, at the European Parliament’s request, Belgian anti-riot police and Parliament’s own security forces mounted a totally disproportionate action to prevent these young people from entering. Such strict security meant that only seven of them met the criteria enabling them to come in and say what they came to say. I do not understand this measure and must express my outrage, Madam President. Parliament is a seat of democracy and it should not be afraid of the people. After all, where was the threat in this case? Are those who think differently from the dominant way of thinking in Parliament a threat? This is not what we call a ‘threat’, it is what we call ‘the wealth of democracy’, and I hope that we will all share a real sense of outrage on 15 October."@en1
