"Madam President, the involvement of the social partners in the legislative process is a fundamental norm in the European Union. While employees throughout Europe are being hit extremely hard by policies of austerity, which do not spare Hungary either, the Hungarian Government is making matters worse: it has launched an assault against employees’ rights. Preparations for the new Hungarian labour law regulations are proceeding behind the scenes in a non-transparent manner and without any official consultations with the social partners, which is contrary to European norms. By contrast, it comes as no surprise that the draft EU Working Time Directive is being written by the European social partners. I ask the European Commission to persuade the Hungarian Government to take into account basic European norms when drafting its amendment of the Labour Code, and to respect the fundamental rights of Hungarian employees."@en1
