"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, you may all recall that some years ago, six or seven years ago, Serb radicals were beating up Hungarians in Vojvodina, currently part of Serbia. When it finally seemed that we could perhaps put this period behind us, threats clearly aimed at forcibly changing ethnic proportions have unfortunately begun to emerge once again this year. It is graffitied on walls, youths are being beaten and it is graffitied on walls that Hungarians should get out of Serbia because it is not their home. A far more serious issue is that the Serbian Government has elevated hate against Hungarians to a state level, and has enacted a law on restitution which rekindles the notion of collective culpability vis-à-vis both Hungarians and Danube Swabians, whom it excludes from the scope of persons entitled to restitution. I sincerely hope that the European Union will dispense with the double standard it has been applying so far, and will at last look beyond protecting sexual minorities and shedding crocodile tears only when it comes to the Gypsies of Italy or France, and will also step up when such anti-democratic, dictatorial and discriminatory laws are adopted in a country standing on the threshold to accession."@en1
