"Madam President, Sortu’s participation and success in the elections have proven that the political expression of the Basque movement is definitely the right way forward. Today, we are at a crucial turning point in the peace process in the Basque Country. Only two weeks ago, an international verification commission was set up to assess and monitor the ceasefire declared by the ETA organisation, which is determined to cooperate with the commission. The latter consists of high-ranking mediation and disarmament experts internationally recognised for their neutrality. Ladies and gentlemen, as Europeans, we have a responsibility to do everything we can, to do everything in our power to resolve the latest conflict within the European Union. I should therefore like to question the European Commission and to ask it how it intends to recognise the international verification commission and to support it as a key contributor to the resolution of this conflict."@en1
