"The guilty verdict in the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko has the potential to cause significant difficulties for relations between Ukraine and the European Union. We respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and understand that disparities exist between the legal systems in various countries. At the same time, it is difficult to comprehend and accept the verdict against the former prime minister. One of our Lithuanian colleagues stated that if purchasing Russian natural gas at excessive prices was a punishable offence, then a number of former Lithuanian prime ministers should be imprisoned. Concerns as to the political motives behind the verdict are widespread in Europe. I therefore call on the Ukrainian authorities to consider all potential solutions which might provide a way out of a situation that is embarrassing for all involved."@en1
