"Madam President, let me tell Mr Tannock that the Bulgarian criminal code actually dates back to 1968, but is still valid. It has not been declared anti-constitutional by the Bulgarian Constitutional Court and all the provisions in it linked to the former communist administration have been abolished. This is also the case in many other Eastern European countries. Our legislation is still from the communist era. I am not saying that we do not have the right to criticise the Ukrainian judicial system. However, I find it unacceptable for a Member of the European Parliament to stand up and say that someone must be ‘acquitted immediately’. We are not judges, but legislators."@en1
