"Madam President, Baroness Ashton, ladies and gentlemen, the prosecution of Yulia Tymoshenko by the current leadership in Ukraine was ill-considered and politically motivated. This is unacceptable. It simultaneously jeopardises closer relations between Ukraine and Europe and Russian-Ukrainian relations. Prosecuting and convicting a former prime minister for her decisions on economic or policy matters is extremely questionable. The truth must, of course, be established. The electorate already expressed their judgment of Ms Tymoshenko in the elections when they voted her out of office as prime minister. Everything that has taken place and is taking place in Ukraine concerning this affair is unacceptable. However, I would like to draw Baroness Ashton’s attention to the alarming fact that there is a European Union Member State where a similar show trial has been initiated against a former prime minister, namely, Ferenc Gyurcsány in Hungary. The Member State in question, sadly, is my home country. In Hungary, like in Ukraine, we witnessed the start of political manipulation of the judiciary last year. This is unacceptable, both within the European Union and among its immediate neighbours."@en1
