"The continuing tension in the Middle East is very worrying, not just in terms of the present, but also the future. We are waiting expectantly for the elections in Egypt on 28 November, hoping for the development of stability and democracy in that country. However, trends in recent months, such as the arrest of civilians and the fact that they are being prosecuted before military tribunals, the recent clash with Christian protesters and attacks on the Israeli embassy, demonstrate that tension is growing. Consciously or not, the division of Egypt is escalating. The current leadership must guarantee the fundamental rights of all Egyptians, including religious minorities, and address the issue of tension among religious communities. We must find out who was responsible for the deaths of 25 protesters in the recent clashes and prosecute those guilty. The special situation in Egypt still applies, with restrictions on the media and freedom of association. Unfortunately, under such conditions, it is hard to imagine the country being ready for democratic elections. Responsibility for improving this situation lies with the provisional military council, which, for now, still enjoys the confidence of democracies worldwide."@en1
