"The Arab Spring is not over, the fight for freedom continues in the Arabian Peninsula. The treatment meted out to the Syrian, Yemeni and Bahraini people has both shocked and moved me. I am therefore pleased that the Vice-President of the Commission has officially denounced the attitude of the local authoritarian regimes, who are clearly in disarray in the face of the popular uprising. The bloody repression of peaceful protests and the arbitrary imprisonment of members of the opposition shows the irresponsibility of these leaders. The Union cannot tolerate such attacks on its core values being committed with impunity. We must therefore make sure that all those suspected of human rights violations are held accountable for their actions. I urge the Union to support the transition to democracy in the Middle East so as to uphold the legitimate aspirations of its people. To this end, I welcome the position of European States lobbying the UN to adopt a Security Council resolution on the matter. It is time we put our commitment to supporting people wanting democracy into action instead of promoting the stability of regimes which continue to deny it. Europeans are duty bound by history to do so."@en1
