"I wish to express my approval at Tawakkul Karman, the Yemeni activist promoting women’s rights and democracy, being named as one of the three winners of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. In fact, awarding this prestigious prize to these activists supporting women’s rights is a mark of recognition and a boost for the active role they have adopted, in spite of the risks, in promoting the notion of a peaceful and just society. Unfortunately, more than 40 women were injured in Yemen on Sunday during a demonstration celebrating the award of the Nobel Prize to their compatriot. This is a show of primitive aggression which is indicative of the climate of violence and terror in which Yemeni women are living.
I strongly condemn attacks like this, and I call on the European Union to take a tougher line in defending human rights, including those of women. Such action highlights that there is more to the situation in Yemen than President Saleh giving up power. As shown by the violence against Christians in Cairo and the religious purge in Iraq, the overthrow of dictators remains only one meagre condition for establishing democracy, which we are duty-bound to support much more."@en1
