"Mr President, a number of statements have been issued recently regarding the situation in Yemen, where the situation is very tense indeed. The humanitarian crisis, the problems of refugees and displaced persons, and particularly the problem of malnutrition, should be getting more attention in this Chamber. It is clear to us all that the Union is now focused on resolving the euro area crisis, but we must not forget our international commitments, and we must be consistent in these. In Luxembourg, on Monday, 10 October, the foreign ministers adopted conclusions at a Council meeting on the situation in Yemen which are essentially correct, as far as the description of the situation is concerned. In the final, fifth point, however, which talks of the Union’s response to the humanitarian and political crisis in Yemen, the conclusions are vague. It is not enough just to respond to current events. It is not enough just to call on all parties in Yemen to do everything possible for a peaceful political transformation. It is not enough to express shock at the unacceptable humanitarian situation in the country. The Union must have the ambition to take more vigorous steps towards ending the drama in Yemen. The same may also be said, Madam Vice-President, of the other countries we have been talking about in today’s debate."@en1
