We must be consistent. Our diplomats must take every opportunity, Baroness Ashton, to remind their Egyptian partners that Europe will work together only with a genuinely free Egypt. At the same time, however, we applaud the efforts of Pope Shenouda III and Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb towards reconciliation and the start of religious dialogue. National reconciliation of Christians and Muslims is the road to genuine peace, not only in Egypt, but also in other Arab Spring countries. In the streets of Cairo, people are sporting an emblem with the Cross and the Crescent Moon above the slogan ‘I am an Egyptian’. This creates hope and we should encourage it."@en1
