"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, Sunday’s massacre of Christians in Cairo, with the involvement of an army that is now the
ruling power in Egypt, is totally unacceptable. I was surprised that, in your Monday statement, you failed to condemn this clearly as a criminal act and a path down which Egypt must not go. I agree with you that the case must be investigated and the guilty parties brought to trial. As this is not the only outrage against the Copts, however, that will not suffice. Political action is required. I would like to ask you to issue a strong warning to the Egyptian leader that European support will be strictly conditional on securing genuine religious freedom, and that Islamisation accompanied by attacks on the Copts is a crime against which EU leaders must come out strongly, rejecting a relativistic approach. Failing this, we will lose respect."@en1
