"Mr President, despite its promising message, the Arab Spring is counting its dead in thousands. In Yemen, the unrest continues, despite the announcement of his resignation by President Saleh. Violent clashes are taking place daily, recently claiming as victims women who were demonstrating in honour of Nobel peace prize winner, Tawakkul Karman.
At the same time, in Bahrain, courts martial are even prosecuting doctors and nurses who did their duty during the unrest. Parliament sits
of any members of the opposition and the sole purpose of the reforms being pushed through by the government is to reduce the political power of the Shiites.
In Syria, according to UN data, over 3 000 people have died since the beginning of March. The international community has not managed to send out the message that will force Assad to resign, although EU recognition of the Syrian national transitional council is a step in the right direction.
Once again, the Union is being called upon to support efforts by countries to democratise and to safeguard their smooth transition. We must send out a forceful message, so as to pave the way for long-term stability and development in these countries and in the area as a whole."@en1
