"Mr President, allow me, first of all, to make a brief comment. Madam High Representative, as Chair of the Delegation for relations with Israel, I wholeheartedly join you in expressing good wishes to the parents of Gilad Shalit, now that he will shortly be released after five years of imprisonment and total isolation. That makes this a day to remember.
Mr President, the Egyptian newspaper
has touchingly and accurately reported on the totally unexpected bloodbath involving peaceful Christian protesters which was caused by the Egyptian army on Sunday evening in Cairo. In a telephone conversation last night, I learned of the deep shock of the Copts and Christians of other denominations. In post-Mubarak Egypt, the government’s appalling failure to protect these people from the aggression of militant Islamists has already become a shocking fact.
However, the future prospects of Egyptian Christians could become still grimmer. We have evidence of that from the ominous events of the beginning of this week.
Madam High Representative, it is my hope that you will make every effort to ensure a genuinely independent and thorough public investigation into Sunday evening’s terrifying, deadly escalation of violence. At the same time, I expect the European Union to take a strong, clear position against the frequent daily social discrimination against the Christian minority in Egypt. After all, for them, for that minority, the proverbial Arab Spring is yet to dawn."@en1
