"We can only congratulate the Danes and the Finns on their wise, patriotic decision. They have to put the emphasis clearly on the security interests of their own citizens. The measures taken to combat corruption, organised crime, human trafficking and prostitution in Romania and Bulgaria are still inadequate and improvements are being made only very slowly. My home country, Austria, is a particularly popular location for people smugglers from the east because of its exposed geographic position. An EU regulation which provides for permanent monitoring of compliance with the Schengen Agreement is currently being drawn up. This should include sanction mechanisms which make it possible to close the loopholes in the individual Member States. It should also be possible to reintroduce border controls temporarily, if the security interests of citizens are being put at risk. Instead of blocking exports of tulip bulbs from the Netherlands at its borders, Romania should be protecting those borders against a very different kind of intruder."@en1
