"Like the large majority of my fellow Members, I hope with all my heart that the European Council meeting of 23 October will lead to a global agreement. I hope it sheds some light on the way forward out of this storm. As well as ambition, we have the means for our recovery. However, we must act together. I have every confidence in our institutions and our decision-making processes. I know that we can rely on the historical role played by the pillars of the European project which have always managed to move Europe forwards. Today, the debate no longer revolves around who is right between the sovereigntists and the federalists. No, today, the question is the survival of our model for peace and prosperity, a unique example of its kind in the world. The solution is obviously more Europe. We need to escape the media frenzy, the enforced short-termism, and stop the current piecemeal approach. We must come up with a lasting solution, and establish a stable process for strong economic governance. Beyond political parties, beyond national interests, this House has always led the way without losing sight of the interests of the people we represent."@en1
