"Mr President, I, too, would like to thank those who have highlighted in this Chamber that Europe is at an extremely difficult juncture. Unfortunately, the postponement of the two summits by a week and yesterday’s ‘no’ vote in the Slovak Parliament revealed once again the lack of consensus on how to emerge from the stalemate which the European Union is in. This lack of prompt response and solidarity is having an adverse impact on confidence, both among citizens and the markets. I hope that this period will help in finalising a coherent strategy which takes into account the major contagion risk due to the interdependencies within the European financial system. However, I hope, most of all, that consideration will be given to the repercussions on the standard of living of ordinary citizens because they, and definitely not market jitters, are the inspiration for public policies."@en1
