"Mr President, the President of the Commission listed all the problems that have arisen and described the methods that need to be used in order to resolve them. He highlighted the Community working method and mentioned interdependence, but interdependence means joint responsibility and, while it is clear that the Member States and their policies are responsible for the situation in terms of the economic crisis, the Commission also has serious responsibilities.
The crisis we are facing is a long-acting crisis. It is not something that will end immediately. However, the decisions needed must be taken right now and the economy and economic situation need to stabilise to the extent required by Europe.
I have seen the ten points listed by Jean-Claude Junker. He is right, of course, to list all the problems; on the other hand, however, we should point out that issues such as credit rating agencies and the uncontrolled manner in which they operate and the fact that the markets have taken over from politics and the representation of the people is something that the Commission addressed many years ago and then abandoned half way through.
If we want to get serious, firstly, the Commission needs to play its part; secondly, Parliament needs to be brought fully up to speed on what is happening, so that it can support the Commission and, thirdly, the Member States need to have a sense of that interdependence and joint responsibility."@en1
