"Mr President, the forthcoming European Council will be held in the midst of a deepening capitalist crisis and increasing competition between the monopolies. The European Union and the bourgeois governments are united on one thing and one thing only: the strategic choice to unleash a flood of new anti-labour measures, to abolish collective agreements, to slash wages and pensions and to decimate grassroots incomes and labour rights everywhere, in all the Member States, in order to guarantee rising profits for the monopolies. The process of reviewing the agreement of 21 July and the efforts to achieve a new, equally fragile and shaky compromise mark the start of even more drastic hardship for the people. The controlled bankruptcy of Greece being engineered by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, together with the PASOK government and other bourgeois governments of the Member States, whatever you choose to call them, together with the haircuts, debt restructurings and selective bankruptcies, have been on the cards for two years. This is what the capitalist crisis has come to. What is of paramount importance is that this is already happening and is exacerbating the uncontrolled bankruptcy of the Greek people. The people of Portugal and Ireland are on the verge of bankruptcy and other Member States of the European Union will follow. The general strike being organised by the Working and Grassroots Movement on 19 October in the public and private sectors in Greece will be a general political statement against the entire anti-labour policy of the European Union. It will mark the start of a new class and labour counterattack, an escalation in the fight for a shift in the balance of power and a reversal in the anti-labour measures and overall anti-grassroots policy of the European Union. A popular alliance is needed in order to bring about a different growth model for the benefit of the people, to write off the debts, and to break free from the European Union and give power and the economy back to the people."@en1
